Why you Should Feature Stop Motion in Your Product Photos

Stop motion creation is a technique where the camera capture still images in a time lapse, with the product being changed or moved between each to give an animated feel to an image.

This type of image is really eye-catching and great for driving attention to your brand on social media platforms. It's the perfect alternative to video that will help bring a creative edge to your products.

This type of animated photo can be great to feature on your company website too.

Stop Motion Pictures

In the example below, Jade Leaf used stop motion video as a way to introduce people to their product. These brands chose stop motion videos for sharing on social media platforms.

Jade Leaf used stop motion to showcase what was included with their Matcha Starter Set. Having animation like this has a different look than traditional videos or photos and is an attention grabber

Sean is a dream to work with! He’s a passionate, creative visionary with top notch execution. He is extremely detail-oriented, taking my concepts and bringing them to life in ways I didn’t imagine. He’s an out-of-the-box thinker and problem-solver that always goes above and beyond.
— Jules, Jade Leaf

The Edoughble brand introduced people to the idea of separating peanut butter and jelly with cookie dough using attention-grabbing stop motion animation.

Sean was amazing to work with. He is professional and he submits his work timely. He was very creative with his videos and photos of my products and I gave him little direction and he nailed it every time!
— Rana, Edoughble

FGO (From Great Origins) wanted to use stop motion to show how their products use real ingredients

His expansive skill set and comprehension of brand is impressive. Plus he’s extremely responsive, collaborative, timely and patient. Definitely would recommend him for video, photography, stop motion, etc - even if you’re not sure exactly what you want, Sean will help you figure it out.

How to Add Stop Motion to Your Photoshoot Project?

If this is something you would like to tackle yourself, there are a few things to keep aware of:

  • Use a tripod that is good and sturdy. You don’t want any movement to happen between each photo. Even the slightest movement can be jarring in the final output

  • Use consistent lighting. Trying to rely on the natural sun can be difficult depending on where you live. If there are clouds it can easily change within seconds causing your scene to look like it’s going through a club 🕺🔦

  • Plan your movement. It’s a great idea to know exactly what you plan on doing and where each item will go. If you plan to have an object move from the left to right, but instead it should have come from the right would mean you would need to reshoot and make sure everything looks consistent

  • Make small movements. With stop motion, be prepared to take at least dozens, or even hundreds of photos with very small movements between each photo. To make the stop motion look smooth, you need to make very small movements so objects can glide from one side to the other. If you end up making a move from the bottom to middle of the screen within one photo it would appear for a split second without realizing what’s even going on. It’ll look like Superman just grabbed it and flew away! 🚀

Stop motion photography can be a lot of fun! But you will need to have patience as these can take hours for just a short 15 second clip. The results can speak for themselves as they look different from videos and can help you stand out.
